The arms of Gorz-Gradisca: Sable, a triple transverse cross Argent, impaling per bend Azure, a lion rampant Or and bendy sinister Argent and Gules, a chief Or, an eagle issuant Sable, beaked Gules, crowned Or charged on the breast with an escutcheon Gules, a fess Argent between the initials "F", "M", "T" and "L" all Or; overall an escutcheon per fess Or, a cross botonny between the letters IHSV Sable; and Or, an eagle displayed Sable debruised in pale by a crozier Gules.

Card. Jakob Missia was born June 30, 1838, Mota, parish of St. Kriz, Ljutomer (Luttemberg), diocese of Lavant (formerly Seckau), Carinthia (now Maribor, Slovenia). His family was from Slovenia and their last name Misel or Mislej was later Latinized as Missia. Received the sacrament of confirmation, May 21, 1850.

He was ordained, May 30, 1863, Rome. In the diocese of Seckau, professor and prefect, Minor Seminary of Graz for two years; secretary of the bishop; episcopal chancellor, 1876; prosynodal examiner; and canon of its cathedral chapter, 1879. Privy chamberlain of His Holiness.

Elected bishop of Laibach (Ljubljana), November 10, 1884. Consecrated, December 7, 1884, Graz. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Gorizia (Görz) and Gradisca d'Isonzo, March 24, 1898. He was created cardinal priest in the consistory of June 18, 1899; received red hat and title of S. Stefano al Monte Celio, December 14, 1899.
