* Siegenfeld's entry: Tafel 47. 97. - 1890. - Wappen der Steiermark nach H. G. Ströhls Drig. Zeichnung zu ßeiner Ößterreichißchen Wappenrolle, Wien 1890, Taf. IV, und II. Uußl., 1895, Taf. XVII. - Zu S. 124 und 365, Unm. 3.

The arms illustrated are a colorized version of the arms as illustrated in Siegenfeld's book. The Eastern March (Austria) became the Duchy of Austria from 1156 under the Brandenberg family. Later, from 1192, they controlled the Duchy of Styria. The Ottokars were generally considered the "founders" of Styria. This area became formally the Duchy of Styria in 1180. The last member of the Ottokar family, Duke Ottkar IV (d:1192) bequeathed the duchy to the Babenbergs. The original arms is purported to included a black panther on a white field, following a dispute, the tinctures were revised to the present day Styrian arms as depicted on the right.
